Clash of Clans Gems: What to Spend Them On (and What to Skip)

Gems are the premium currency in Clash of Clans, and they disappear quickly if you spend them without a plan. This guide covers what gems do, which purchases give you the most value, and which ones you can safely skip.

What gems do

Gems let you skip waiting time and unlock things that would otherwise take a long time or real effort. You can use them to finish upgrades and training early, buy extra resources, get cosmetic items such as hero skins and scenery, and unlock additional builders. Prices and offers change with game updates, so always check the in-game shop before you buy.

Best uses of gems

1. Extra builders. Every builder is another upgrade running at the same time. For most players this is the most useful long-term purchase, because it speeds up everything you do afterwards. If you have not unlocked all your builders yet, start here.

2. Key upgrades at the right moment. Gems are best used to finish an important upgrade that would otherwise block your progress, such as a hero you need for an upcoming event or a defense you need before a war. Use them when time is the only thing in your way.

3. Cosmetics you will enjoy. Skins and scenery do not change how strong you are, but if you play every day they make the game more fun. If you plan to buy something for looks, do it after your builders are sorted out.

What to skip

Buying resources with gems. Gold and elixir come back on their own while you play, so spending gems on them is poor value. The only exception is when a single missing resource is stopping a high-priority upgrade.

Speeding up small upgrades. Finishing a short upgrade early saves a few hours but burns gems you could use on something bigger. Save them for long upgrades.

Impulse buys during events. Limited-time offers are designed to feel urgent. Decide what you need first, then see whether an offer fits that plan.

How to get more gems

You can collect gems for free by clearing obstacles on your village, completing achievements, and taking part in seasonal events and challenges. This is slow, but it adds up if you check in daily.

If you want to move faster, you can buy gems. Buying gems from a store such as Radogo can cost less than the price you see in your local app store, because top-up prices differ between regions. We explain why in our post on regional pricing.

A simple spending plan

  1. Unlock all available builders.
  2. Save gems for long, important upgrades.
  3. Spend on cosmetics only after your base is on track.
  4. Ignore resource bundles unless you are truly blocked.
